How to Prepare Your Peoria Roof for Illinois Winter

- Clear gutters and downspouts completely — twice if trees are heavy
- Trim overhanging branches at least 6 feet from the roof
- Check for missing or cracked shingles and get them fixed
- Inspect flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights
- Verify soffit vents aren't blocked by insulation
- Add attic insulation if it's below R-49 (most Peoria homes should be)
Why Ice Dams Form (and How to Stop Them)
Ice dams form when attic heat melts roof snow that then refreezes at the cold eaves. The water backs up under the shingles and leaks into the house. Fixing the roof doesn't fix the ice dam — you fix it by insulating the attic floor properly and ventilating the attic so the roof stays cold.
